Optical Cable Buys N.C.-Based Connector Supplier

Optical Cable Corp., a Roanoke County-based manufacturer of fiber optic cable, has paid $11.5 million to buy SMP Data Communications, a manufacturer of high-speed data cross-connect products.

Optical Cable Corp. hopes that this acquisition will provide their customers a one-stop shop for fiber-optic cable, fiber-optic cable connectors and copper connectors. Fiber-optic cable and products will be sold under Optical Cable's name while SMP will retain its name for sale of copper products and connectors.

Optical Cable sells its fiber optical cable, known for its durability, to colleges and universities, mining companies, private networks and the military.
